Compression

5 knob compressor
$135

The BYOC 5 Knob Compressor is essentially a Ross Gray Compressor clone with the added "attack" knob mod, but the BYOC 5 Knob compressor takes the Ross clone to a whole new level. It has Ratio and Tone knobs as well. The tone knob is unlike other tone knobs because it takes advantage of a pre-existing high-pass filter in the Ross circuit and makes it variable rather than tacking on a separate tone stack. So because it is a part of the circuit that was always there, it allows you to maintain the characteristics that made the circuit a classic, while at the same time allowing you to add some jangle to your tone and better match the pedal to single coils or humbuckers. The Ratio knob gives you parallel compression, allowing you to blend in various amounts of compressed and dry signal from 100% dry to 100% compressed. The Ratio control is an original BYOC design that is transistor based rather than the typical IC based blend circuit so that it keeps to the theme and tone of the original circuit. It is completely transparent and does not "correct" the signal phase which is important for maintaining the sound of the original and keeping it from becoming too sterile. We've also bent the circuit so that it can accept the BA6110 chip which was designed specifically to replace the traditional CA3080 chip. The BA6110 is now obsolete too, but it was claimed to be more sensitive and have less distortion than the CA3080. This means longer sustain, more squish, more output, and more transparent tone with less noise. Let's not forget that the pedal is also true bypass. All of these features not only make the BYOC 5 Knob Compressor far more versatile than the Ross gray compressor and its clones, but it gives it a hi-fi studio polish that other stompbox compressors can't match.

Classic Compressor
$105 - $120 with Vintage Uprgade

Our 5 Knob Compressor is the pinnacle in the evolution of the Dynacomp/Ross circuit. Yet some people still prefer the lower-fi vintage sound and simplicity of a straight up Ross compressor clone. For those people, we offer the Classic Compressor. It has no modifications, just the standard Sustain and Level knobs. The circuit is true to the original Ross gray compressor and comes with the CA3080E chip and 2N5088 transistors (these are the semi-conductors currently used in the Keeley Compressor). 1% Metal film resistors, polyester metal film caps, a double sided PCB, and Neutrik jacks make this kit a bargain when compared to other Ross clones. And yes, this pedal is true bypass. VINTAGE UPGRADE Version - The stock BYOC Classic Compressor kit can go head to head with the finest Ross clones. But add the Vintage Upgrade Pack and you'll give your compressor the vintage mojo that the the other clones just don't have. Comes with one CA3080A chip, one TO-100 gold plated socket, and five 2SC1849 transistors. The metal can CA3080A was the chip used in the very first script logo Dynacomps. The 2SC1849 transistors were used in the script logo Dynacomps, the original Ross gray compressor, and the early Keeley Compressors. With the Vintage Upgrade Pack, the compressor has all the squish of the CA3080E/2N5088 combo, but with a more natural attack, more overall volume, and better retention of high frequencies. These parts aren't cheap, but they're well worth the extra coin if you're looking for the ultimate Ross clone.

Li'l Comp
$75 - $80 painted

This is an exact clone of the Script Logo era Dynacomp, only it's about half the size. What else is there to say? Features all through-hole components, including the NOS CA3080 chip, and full-sized panel mounted hardware.

This is a fairly simple build based on the Dan Armstrong Orange Squeezer. Known for its incredibly transparent compression and low noise floor with just a hint of added warmth, it's a favorite alternative to the typical OTA-based compressors guitar players usually have to choose from. We stayed true to the original circuit for the most part. We include a few extra components to make it more bass friendly. So if you're a bass player, the kit comes stock with everything you need. Just follow the instructions on how to change it over to bass specs. The only real change we made to the original circuit was the addition of a cross-fade dry blend control.

Optical Compressor
$100

Optical compression provides a more transparent, studio like sound. None of the snappy rubber band attack that is associated with other types of compressors. This is for the guitarist who wants that "can't tell when it's on but miss it when it's gone" style compression. But it also has a huge amount of squish on tap if you want it. The BYOC Optical Compressor can put a serious strangle hold on your signal and you will definitely know that it's on when you turn the compression knob up. This is a very easy build. Low parts count and only 2 knobs. It can be run off a single 9v battery or 9v DC power supply. But it can also work with a 12, 15, or 18v DC power supply for even more headroom without having to do anything special to the pedal....Just plug in a negative tip 18v power supply.

Parametric Multi-Band Compressor
$135 - $145 painted

Picture
The BYOC Parametric Multi-Band Compressor is a must have for bass and acoustic guitar players. It is entirely analog with true bypass. It uses a state variable filter to split your signal into two separate signals - low and high. The cross-over frequency knob lets you select where in the spectrum you want to split your signal. It has a massive sweep range of 44Hz to 3.3kHz so you can focus on just the lowest lows, the highest highs, and all points in between. Once the cross-over splits your signal into low and high, each is sent to its own separate optical compressor circuit. This pedal actually has two completely independent optical compressors. The high signal has its own compressor and the low signal has its own compressor. This allows you to put as much or as little compression as you need on each of the frequencies. And because it's optical, you get the fast and transparent compression that is preferred on bass and acoustic guitar, or electric players who don't want their tone squished. This is not an EQ per se, but because you can control the volume level of each frequency, you can use it as such. This, in addition to being able to adjust the level of compression on each frequency, allows you to sculpt and enhance your tone in a way that the typical single band compressor just can't even come close to, no matter how many knobs and switches it has.
